A great deal of work has been done recently in an effort to make the famous Zel'dovich approximation (ZA) more general, or to take it to higher order. Recently, the author has developed and verified that ZA can be usefully applied to a wide range of initial conditions with substantial small-scale power, by truncating the power spectrum to remove nonlinear modes. Here, the author reports on the optimum choice of smoothing windows to perform this truncation. It has been found that the form of the smoothing window can make a great deal of difference in the accuracy of the approximation. Furthermore, the best choice depends on whether one wishes to approximate the evolution of initial conditions or try to restore them from an evolved nonlinear state.
