Geomagnetic Field: Structure

Scientific paper

The authors introduce the concept of the m-harmonic (azimuthal) energy spectrum. They then determine the latitude distribution of the m-harmonics at the Earth's surface and their asymmetry relative to the equator; the harmonics with m > 2 are much weaker in amplitude relative to the fundamental harmonics m = 0, 1, 2. When the radial distributions of the n-harmonics and m-harmonics are compared, the authors find the concept of "white noise" to be inadequate for determining the depth of the source of the geomagnetic field.
