The longitudinal distribution of inflowing and outflowing field-aligned currents in the substorm current wedge (SCW) has been studied based on data obtained at the North American chain of magnetic variations stations. It has been shown that, when the ratio of the IMF components Bz/By < 1, the azimuthal dimensions of the currents flowing out of the ionosphere are larger (at By > 0) and smaller (at By < 0) than the dimensions of the region of inflowing currents. The hypothesis that the SCW asymmetry testifies to the appearance of a potential drop in the ionosphere between the Northern and Southern hemispheres on magnetic field lines passing through SCW during the substorm expansion phase has been discussed.
