The ideal MHD equations are reduced to a single equation under the
assumption of axisymmetric flow. A variational principle from which the
equation is derivable is given. The characteristics of the equation are
briefly discussed. The equation is used to rederive the theorem of
Gussenhoven and Carovillano.
