A striking aspect of the evolution of stars from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the planetary nebula (PN) phase is the sudden change in morphology of the circumstellar gas. On the AGB the mass loss is roughly spherically symmetric, but it rapidly evolves into prominent axi-symmetry in proto-PNe. This transition is believed by many to be caused by interaction with a binary companion. If this scenario is correct, we also expect the companion to play a role in shaping the extended AGB envelope before the transition takes place. To evaluate this we develop an approximate prescription for the observed shapes of envelopes based on available simulations, in terms of the binary parameters, envelope orientation, and type of observation. We use the results to examine the possible role of binary companions in triggering the onset of axi-symmetry in some well-studied cases. This work is supported in part by NSF grant AST 08-06910.
