Compensation and restructuring of the Advanced X-ray Astronomical Facility (AXAF) are detailed which respond to the reduced budgetary levels assigned to the program. Specific attention is given to the revised plans for the precise instrumentation including the six ultrasmooth X-ray mirrors, two high-resolution imagers, and a high-spectral-resolution X-ray calorimeter. One of the mirrors for the AXAF was developed to provide an 'all-up' test to study the potential image quality, and budgetary constraints are shown to lead to significant losses in scientific research. To compensate for the loss of two of the six mirrors a high-earth orbit is proposed instead of LEO, and the losses in terms of maintenance and recoverability are noted. The revised plan is theorized to provide essentially the same scientific potential for the AXAF with reduced capacity for post-deployment servicing.
