The average flux decrements between Ly-alpha and Ly-beta, D(A), and between Ly-beta and the Lyman limit, D(B), have been computed from the observed spectra of seven quasars. These new data increase the statistical information about the redshift distribution of hydrogen intergalactic absorbers. All the available data are compared with simulations of the average absorptions in QSO spectra, computed mainly on the basis of the presently known statistics of the Lyman absorption lines. Discrepancies recently outlined on the evolution of the absorbers at z greater than about 4 could be reconciled including, together with the thin Lyman forest clouds, a population of damped Lyman systems whose statistical properties are being disentangled. Within the observational and statistical uncertainties there is evidence neither for a dramatic change in the evolution of the absorbers, nor for the presence of a new diffuse component of neutral hydrogen.
