Previously (Lu & Hamilton, 1991, ApJ, 380, L89), we proposed that solar flares are avalanches of many small reconnection events. We showed how this physical picture of flares can be used to relate the small scale processes and the global statistics of flares, providing a way to study the physics of the unobservable small scale processes from observable flare properties. A simple model of the energy release and avalanche processes was given. In this paper, predictions of this model are compared with solar flare data from the ISEE-3 satellite, and are found to agree with the observed flare frequency distributions. The global statistics of events in an avalanche model depend on, among other things, the instability criterion (energy release process) and the redistribution process (avalanche process). The physical implications of avalanche models for the energy release and avalanche processes are discussed. (1) Supported by NSF grant PHY 91-00283 and NASA grant NAGW 1583.
