Attention is given to autonomous stellar-reference attitude updates obtained by using the dense and accurate infrared-star catalogs generated by an infrared sensor system. IR cataloging is discussed in terms of star density and spatial distribution, orbit considerations, solar neighborhood background effects, and star-position determination accuracy. The basic functions for onboard signal and data processing are outlined and centroiding algorithms are presented. Performance variations with algorithm complexity, blur circle size and number of sightings are discussed.
