A new gyro failure detection algorithm, implemented onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), is described. It can detect a class of potential gyro failures that would not have been recognized by pre-existing failure detection algorithms. It detects failures by monitoring the change in the system momentum calculated in the flight computer. The results of simulations for the HST show that the system momentum test is perceptive enough to detect a soft gyro failure from any three-gyro configuration.
