The performance of an automated zenith setting device for the mirror of a horizontal meridian circle is described. The mechanism comprises optical and electronics sections, the former with drives for turning the mirror by graduated increments and the latter equipped to register the mirror position. The position can be controlled to within 5 arcsec. Computer-controlled zenith accuracy of 2 arcsec has been attained in tests. The system is part of a three-mechanism arrangement for fully automatic horizontal meridian circle observations.
