SPOT5 satellite was successfully launched in May 2002. A new validation technique was used for SPOT5 technical et operational qualification. This technique is called automatic because it enables to test satellite operational procedures without operator interaction when executed on a satellite simulator. First, the main characteristics of this validation technique are given. Then, the use of automatic validation and the results obtained for SPOT5 qualification are described. Procedures defined to recover from the anomalies of the pyrotechnic unit are particularly complex and also critical because these procedures are used during LEOP. Their validation is taken by way of an example. To conclude advantages of this approach and possible improvements are presented.
