The visual classification of stellar objects and galaxies in connection with astronomical applications of photographic photometry is very time-consuming. A description is presented of an automatic image classification technique which uses parameters derived from the structure of the images themselves. In this way it is possible to use a simple program to classify images over a range of brightness, which for a given telescope, depends only upon the scanning aperture of the microdensitometer used and the signal to noise ratio of the plate. The separation technique employed is based upon the slope and fit of the image to the point spread function of the photographic plate. The point spread function (PSF) is a one-dimensional function (in this case a polynomial) representing the brightness distribution when a stellar (point) light source is affected by atmospheric seeing, instrumental response and photographic emulsion.
