An automatic method using a computer is presented for determining the plasma frequency in various space regions from data obtained using the relaxation sounder aboard ISEE 1. The principle of the relaxation sounder and the signals observed in different regions are briefly described, and the method used in the magnetosheath and solar wind regions, where only one resonance is observed at the plasma frequency, is discussed in detail. The determination of the plasma frequency in the magnetosphere, where many resonances of different natures are observed, is considered in detail.
