In the fall of 1975, NASA will launch two Viking spacecraft toward Mars. When the orbit around Mars is reached the Viking will separate into an orbiter and a landing capsule. The Viking Orbiter will collect data during the orbit and it will maintain communications with the earth and the Viking Lander Capsule. Two radar systems and two RF communication systems will be employed to carry out the extraterrestrial unmanned landing. The radar altimeter, a 1-GHz pulse radar operating on four modes during Lander descent, will measure altitude. The terminal descent landing radar, consisting of four independent Doppler radars and an antenna cluster of four individual two-beam arrays, will determine velocity, drift, and attitude. Aeroshell instruments will be used to analyze the composition of the Martian atmosphere. On the surface, data describing significant properties of the planet will be transmitted by the Lander. Cameras will be used to obtain three dimensional high resolution images of Mars to earth.
