An automated quasar detection system based on the establishment of decision criteria in the examination of a large number of low resolution photographic spectra is described. A Prism Reduction System measures, analyzes and classifies low resolution spectra from photographic plates. The criteria include identification and classification of a large fraction of the population on a given plate, the presence of objects which correspond to well-defined selection criteria, and the absence of contaminated spectra around the anomalous object. The images are, on an object-by-object basis, subjected to a 256 x 256 pixel raster scan for transformation to celestial coordinates, examined for spectral characteristics, and cleansed of contaminating spectra. The system is also suitable for detecting H II galaxies and carbon stars and has been proven highly accurate in comparison with manual examinations of known fields down to about 20 mag.
