The use of photoelectric autoguiders for optical telescopes is discussed, considering characteristics of the stellar image, seeing, the light distribution, and offset guiding. Devices with opto-mechanical sampling or electronic scanning are considered, including guiders using a rotating knife-edge, and the quadrant photomultiplier. Attention is also given to various types of passive quadrant detectors, to acquisition TV systems, and to image dissectors. Miscellaneous applications, such as guiding an electronographic camera, autofocusing, and daylight guiding of infrared telescopes, are also considered.
