Precipitation of electrons in the morning sector of the auroral zone in relation to magnetospheric substorm activity was investigated by balloons and GEOS-2 during the International Magnetospheric Study. The relation between the distribution function of energetic electrons at GEOS-2 and the precipitation at and near the conjugate magnetic footprint in the auroral zone is studied. It is shown that the presence of drifting electrons is a necessary but not sufficient condition for precipitation.
