The morphology of an auroral event observed in July 1986 at Kiruna (Sweden) is studied using an X-ray imager. The X-ray event started at 2300 UT (100 LT) and lasted 1 hr. The event was characterized by a short period (5 to 15 sec) modulation superposed upon a longer period modulation (several minutes). The shorter period modulation identifies this as a pulsating aurora. Examination of the spectral and spatial characteristics of this event reveals that the amount of spatial structure of the precipitation region depends on the spectrum of the X-rays, a softer spectrum is associated with more spatial structure. A northward motion of the X-ray source region concurrent to the polarity change in the Z-component of the magnetic field is observed.
