We review some new theoretical developments in auroral microphysics with emphasis on particle acceleration and the emission of radiation. Particle acceleration depends heavily on the presence of wave fields. Preference is given to stochastic acceleration in localized structures. Radiation is believed to be due to two different mechanisms: direct amplification by the maser mechanism and nonlinear radiation mechanisms. These two processes probably act complementarily and may work above and below the ionosphere leading to observation of radiation at the topside and on the ground. Some new ideas based on unconventional statistics are mentioned.
