A French-Soviet experiment using multiple balloons and multiple telemetry stations in auroral zones is described. The simultaneous auroral multi-balloon observatories (SAMBO) experiment was performed during the period January through March, 1974 to study X-ray precipitation, photometric emissions, and electric fields at many points in the sky during auroral disturbances. Results show the presence of a growth phase clearly visible in the X-ray and riometer records and that a space-energy ambiguity exists in the X-ray measurements due to some very localized intensifications of electron precipitation which produces the same X-ray energy spectrum as a wide precipitation region where the electron energy spectrum becomes harder.
