Geomagnetic virtual pole positions (VGPs) determined from archaeomagnetic directional data have been compared with three ancient accounts of low latitude observations of the Aurorae borealis from the 384-322 BC period, the period from 55 BC to 40 AD, and from 1138 AD. The geomagnetic latitudes of the VGPs obtained were found to range from 65 to 70 deg. The present results are consistent with the earlier observations, confirming the inclination of the geomagnetic pole toward the observing sites. Auroral types are discussed, along with severe aurora related to magnetic storms.
