In December 1999 there was an apparent downturn in geomagnetic and auroral activities in the UK compared with the higher levels between September and November. Activity seemed to pick up again by January. A longstanding coronal hole at the Sun began to affect the Earth's magnetosphere about August 15 and has continued to do so with every rotation of the Sun at least until the end of January 2000.
