The folklore of aurorae and meteor fireballs abounds with eye-witness accounts of strange sounds heard simultaneously with their appearance. A huge meteor fireball over coastal New South Wales in 1978 provided the clues and incentive leading to a solution to this centuries-old paradox. The energy is transferred from the event to the observer as VLF radiation which, if conditions are favorable, is transduced to high-audio-frequency sound by artifacts surrounding the observer.
