The instrumentation of the Solar Cosmic Ray and Trapped Particle Experiment aboard Applications Technology Satellite-6 (ATS-6). Protons from 300 keV to 250 MeV and alphas from 2 to 200 MeV are measured by two orthogonal proton and alpha particle telescopes. Electrons are excluded by a magnetic field in the collimator aperture. The electron sensor is an electron spectrometer which uses a double focusing magnet of Alnico VIII to direct electrons within the 50 keV to 1 MeV energy range onto one of two silicon detectors. The shape of the pole face was optimized by a computer simulation method to obtain a sharp 50 keV threshold and to assure 100% transmission through the magnet for all electrons leaving the collimator exit. The spectrometers are used in conjunction with the 300 keV to 1.2 MeV proton channels to investigate the injection of electrons and protons into the magnetosphere during substorms. Two solar cosmic ray events observed during the first four months of operation are discussed.
