ATR infrared spectroscopy is a sensitive reflection spectroscopy to analyse the chemical composition of soil samples. The method is sensitive enough to detect adsorbates on the grains of a soil if the soil particles are sufficient small. It is planned to develop a miniaturized ATR infrared spectrometer for planetary exploration, which should be small enough, to fit into devices, which dig into soils.
