Results of experimental studies show nitrogen atom concentrations of approximately 10 to the 9th atoms/cu cm in the nighttime polar thermosphere. The frequency of occurrence of such values of N concentration is about 50%. Furthermore, there is no marked dependence of probability of high N concentration in the 130-170 km height range on K index. The rate of production of N atoms by thermal electrons accelerated by electric fields is evaluated.
