The atomic and molecular (AM) data activities including data compilation, evaluation and dissemination in Japan have been described which had started mainly with the intention of providing the reliable data for fusion plasma research. In a wide range of scientific and technological fields, the importance of the AM data has recently been recognized and their applications are growing. Some crucial issues in evaluating the AM data have been discussed.
