Perturbation equations are linearized to provide a model for ionospheric dynamics in terms of acoustic and gravity waves. Attention is given to Coriolis rotation effects, which cause equatorial gravity waves to resemble acoustic waves in their dispersion properties. Excitation of the equatorial waves can then come about through supersonic processes, e.g., solar eclipse and terminator motion. Lack of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID) at equatorial latitudes are explained on the basis of rotational effects at mid-latitude, which dissipate their energy.
