The availability of observing time on the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) telescope (part of the US Air Force's Maui Space Surveillance System) opened an opportunity for the installation of a premier Rayleigh Lidar. The layout and operation of this system, which measures density perturbations as well as temperature profiles throughout the middle atmosphere, will be presented in greater detail. The AEOS telescope also plays host to a Na Doppler Lidar, which will complement the Rayleigh measurements. These Lidars, in addition to other ground-based remote sensing instruments, comprise the current Maui-MALT (Middle Atmosphere/ Lower Thermosphere) initiative. The suite of Maui-MALT instruments is used primarily to study atmospheric dynamics; specifically the sources, propagation and energy deposition associated with gravity waves. In preparation for the composite data stream, we will also present model results of gravity wave ray traces above the Hawaiian region. These ray traces are obtained from the Naval Research Lab's Gravity wave Regional Or Global RAy Tracer (GROGRAT) model with background atmospheres obtained from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP) analyses. These initial model runs assume a source spectrum consisting of a wide variety of horizontal/temporal wavenumbers and amplitudes, all of which are then tracked into the lower mesosphere. Such information leads to a better understanding of the expected dominant temporal/vertical wavelengths, amplitudes, and potential daily and seasonal variability of gravity waves throughout the region, and will become a valuable tool during data analysis.
