It has been discovered that the equivalent widths of the methane
absorption band at 619 nm in the spectrum of Neptune are dependent on
the orbital position of Triton. It is suggested that observed changes in
the equivalent width of the band and the (J-K) color index are due to
atmospheric tides and Neptune's rotation.
