This paper presents a review of the use of satellite remote sounding experiments for studies of the earth in both the stratosphere and mesosphere. A brief summary of the main scientific objectives involved is followed by a description of space projects in this area in which the RAL has played a role. The paper seeks to demonstrate the important role which observations from space have played, and will continue to play, in advancing our understanding of the complex scientific processes in the atmosphere of our planet.
