Earth Atmosphere: Refraction, Spectroscopy: Refraction

Scientific paper

Large-field spectroscopy is severely influenced by atmospheric refraction. Atmospheric refraction affects spectroscopic observation in two ways: (1) the effects of differential refraction across the field; (2) the effects of atmospheric dispersion. The authors calculate both these effects for a telescope with a 5° field and mounted at the Xinglong Station. The differential refraction effects are serious. The directions of deviations are complex and the deviations cannot be reduced by simply rotating the field. The atmospheric dispersion effects are noticeable. They affect multiobject spectroscopic observation seriously.
