The relationship between the structure of the lower ionosphere during the stratospheric warmings of 1975, 1977, and 1978 and large-scale processes in the neutral atmosphere is studied on the basis of rocket data on height profiles of electron density. The occurrence of the winter anomaly in the D region is found to be closely linked to the dynamics and intensity of tropospheric and stratospheric processes, the propagation and dissipation of wave disturbances in the stratosphere and mesosphere, and transport processes in the mesosphere and thermosphere.
