New high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the prototype of W Virginis stars are presented, made between January 1990 and June 1990. In particular, H-alpha, He I, and Na D lines were observed, and their profile variations are interpreted in the framework of the outward propagation during each period of a strong shock wave throughout the atmosphere. The observed spectral features indicate the existence of significant ballistic motions at the photospheric level within the atmosphere. The pulsations of upper layers have the form of a running wave which indicates that the atmosphere of W Vir is very extended; the shock intensity is strong enough to produce hydrogen emission. Helium is ionized in the shock wake during the phase interval 0.8-1.0 (i.e., when the shock reaches its greatest intensity).
