The deceleration of the Valec fireball in the atmosphere is analyzed on the basis of available data. It is shown that neither the calculations of Stulov and Chernenko (1990) nor those of Tertitskii using Bronshtein's (1983) theory of ablation can correctly represent the course of the meteoroid's deceleration, especially in the upper part of the trajectory (in the 80-30 height range). It is further found that neither single nor progressive fragmentation satisfies the observational data. It is suggested instead that this meteoroid might have fragmented according to the scheme put forward by Grigorian (1979), but it is noted that the verification of this hypothesis would require special calculations.
