Consideration is given to three factors which cause atmospheric fragmentation of meteorites: loads which affect a meteorite body moving in the atmosphere; the body's geometry, which is responsible for stress distribution; and the strength of the meteorite material. Fragmentation is found to be due to mechanical loading by inertial forces and flow pressure. Since destructive loads are associated with aerodynamic pressure and, consequently, depend on motion velocity, there is a possibility for determining the geocentric velocity and transition to the astronomical parameters of objects producing meteorite showers.
