We examined UT1 (the rotation angle of the Earth with respect to the celestial reference frame) variations induced by the atmosphere during the CONT05 observation campaign (September, 2005). One of the targets of this campaign is to observe short periodic variations in the Earth rotation, with high accuracy, using VLBI. In this paper, we examined the atmospheric UT1 excitation during the campaign period using meteorological data sets. We found that the time-varying profile of the UT1 is explained by wind fluctuations in the jet streams. Some of irregular variation patterns at periods of a few days are due to meandering flows of the Northern jet stream. Atmospheric excitations other than from the jet streams show slow (monthly scale) variation patterns.
