In this paper we identify and attempt to quantify all effects of Atmospheric Dispersion (AD) which might affect the performance of a European ELT. For each effect, we examine the implications and possible methods of correction. We produce "demonstration-of-possibility" ADC designs for the proposed 42-m ("E-ELT"). The rotational (RADC) and linear ADC (LADC) optical designs are compared at the Nasmyth focus and at the intermediate focal plane.
