Atmosphere and polar caps are the major factors influencing the rotation of Mars. Atmospheric angular momentum budget is studied from the data of Global Circulation Model (GCM) developed by Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique. The direct computation of atmospheric torques on Mars allows understanding of the interaction processes associated with the angular momentum transfer between the planet and atmosphere. The torque and atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) approaches must give exactly the same results if the angular momentum of the system is conserved. However, the atmospheric angular momentum budget equation is not always satisfied even if no data is assimilated in GCM simulations. In the present study, we test if the atmospheric angular momentum budget equation of Mars is satisfied and we investigate the possible sources of discrepancy between the torque and AAM approaches.
