A very simple classification scheme for atmospheres of solar-system objects is described along with various criteria for the existence of atmospheres and their interrelationship. A method proposed for determining the sizes of borderline objects having practically no atmosphere is used to evaluate the possibility that atmospheres exist on the Galilean satellites of Jupiter. Upper limits are obtained for the gas density in the atmospheres of Io, Europa, and Callisto in the absence of strong gas sources.
