Planetary detection methods have now advanced to the point where it is possible to detect extrasolar planets only slightly larger in size and mass than the Earth. The newly discovered class of planets known as super Earths, with masses from 1 to 10 Earth masses, will afford scientists the chance to study the atmospheres of low-mass planets with future observing facilities, such as JWST. This talk will present the current state of efforts to model super Earth atmospheres and the range of atmospheres that such planets may possess. Specific attention will be given to how observations and models together can help to constrain atmospheric conditions on low-mass planets.
