The theory of thermal defocussing of lens systems is discussed and conditions relating to athermal objectives are derived. New telescope objectives were designed which are insensitive to radial temperature gradients using athermal optical glasses, and three prototypes were manufactured. The objectives were tested by ray tracing and by experiments. The improvement in the temperature behavior compared to conventional objectives is remarkable.
