We consider the collimating action of field lines in a stationary axisymmetric magnetosphere at large distances far outside the light cylinder, by using special relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for an ideal cold plasma. Our approach is to show analytically any change in the field line configuration in logarithmic scales of the cylindrical radius. We first derive the general solution for vertically collimated winds in order to find a cylindrical structure near to the polar region of the rotating magnetosphere. All of the open field lines which are nearly conical on smaller scales turn out to extend to larger scales where self-collimation becomes remarkable. Our main purpose is to estimate the characteristic scale necessary for self-collimation, which is crucially dependent on the wind energy. We conclude that the asymptotic collimation for winds with an energy that is too high remains very weak. Further, we present an equatorial boundary condition which permits the structure of a smooth neutral sheet, which is different from the usual split-monopole models. The open field lines covering the equatorial region are found to be collimated at much larger scales. We discuss the results in relation to jet formation in active galactic nuclei.
