High signal-to-noise spectra of the CO (1-0) and (2-1) lines in IRC + 10216 are presented to study the line shapes in detail. The profiles exhibit slight asymmetries which are consistent with those expected for optically thick lines formed in an expanding envelope in the presence of a small turbulent velocity in the gas. The profiles of the thick lines are shifted to higher velocities than the thinner C-13O (2-1) line, and show evidence for excess emission at the extreme blue wings of the lines, which arises from gas near the front face of the envelope. Analysis of the data yields values for the expansion and turbulent (FWHM) velocities of the envelope of 14.1 and 0.9 km/s, respectively. An excitation temperature of about 5 K is required to account for the observed excess emission at the blue wings of the lines, and sets interesting constraints on the state of the gas near the extreme outer edge of the CO-emitting envelope.
