Scientific paper

Yohkoh satellite spectrometer observations are here used to investigate the symmetry and temporal development of X-ray spectral lines for 16 flares, giving attention to the degree of line blueshift and asymmetric broadening as a function of flare impulsiveness. The increase of total flare spectrum blueshift with increasing fractional rate of flux change supports models which predict that stronger heating in flares leads to greater blueshifting of plasma.
