Doubts expressed by Craig and Brown (1976) concerning the usefulness of high resolution X-ray spectra are considered, taking into account the claim that 'a high resolution spectrometer is almost invariably included in solar X-ray satellites'. It is pointed out that high spectral resolution can only be achieved with a collimated spectrometer and that no solar satellite has ever carried such a spectrometer. High resolution solar X-ray spectra have found a wide application in the fields of solar physics, atomic physics, and astrophysics.
