The equation of state of quark matter is described, and the theory of phase transitions between nuclear and quark matter with switched-off weak interactions is considered. This theory is applied to cold neutron stars, and the minimal (critical) binding energy e of strange matter corresponding to the stability of a neutron star of a given mass is calculated. The constraint on e following from the requirement of stability of young and hot neutron stars with a baryon rest mass of 1.4 solar masses is discussed. The problem of identification of known compact objects from the data on glitches, rates of cooling, etc., is discussed, and possible candidates for neutron stars are outlined. The consequences of this identification and results are examined.
