Collimated supersonic outflows, often relativistic, have become a common feature in many astrophysical settings, from star formation regions to extragalactic radio sources. In this review I shall illustrate the main observational characteristics of the various classes of jets and discuss the theoretical models used for their interpretation. In particular I shall outline the physical questions and challenges faced by these models, with specific reference to jets from Active Galactic Nuclei, and present experiments that are being used to test the validity of the theoretical approach. Finally I discuss in some detail the issue of heating of intracluster gas by jets from AGNs.
