A review of how the astrophysical jet has come to be a prominent concept in many branches of astronomy will be presented. An attempt will be made to review the present status of the observations from cometary jets to quasar jets. Although we study them for their own sake, they are a means to an end, informing us of the physical and evolutionary processes of their engines and of their ability to regulate their surroundings. An overview of the differences in their interpretation through models and simulations will be presented.
